Effect of remote video counseling on symptoms of depression and anxiety
Studies show that remote video counseling with mental health professionals has a positive impact on depression and anxiety
A recent study has demonstrated that remote video counseling between patients and mental health professionals contributes to small but meaningful improvements in symptoms of depression and anxiety. Despite the small changes, the researchers emphasize their significance amid the high prevalence of these disorders.
Depression and anxiety disorders are among the leading causes of disability worldwide. However, most people suffering from these conditions receive care at the primary care level and do not have access to specialized mental health assistance. Although previous studies have pointed to the benefits of telemedicine in primary care, evidence for the effectiveness of remote consultations with psychotherapists has been scarce.
To fill this gap, a group of researchers from Germany evaluated the effectiveness of a new video counseling model for helping patients with symptoms of depression and anxiety at the primary care level. The study involved 376 participants (mean age 45 years, 63% women) who had seen a therapist with significant symptoms of depression or anxiety. Participants were randomly assigned into two groups: one group received care using the new model and the other received standard treatment.
The program included five 50-minute live video counseling sessions with short-term psychotherapy. The second group received standard treatment that included counseling, medication prescriptions, and referrals. At six months, the video counseling group showed a slight decrease in depressive and anxiety symptoms, which was maintained after 12 months. The video counseling model also helped reduce psychological distress associated with physical symptoms.
The researchers note the significance of this study given the high prevalence of these conditions. The study highlights the model's potential to improve the availability and effectiveness of public health care for depression and anxiety.
